Two new albums have been released by gay musical icons just in time for Spring. With one inspired by breakups and new beginnings, the other by classic disco, they arrive at the right time to put actual Spring in your step.
Ricky Martin’s “A Quien Quiera Escuchar” is entirely in Spanish and gives us more of what we’ve always loved about him–his verve, expressive romanticism and hot dance. Starting with “Adiós,” which is toe-tapping exotic and dramatic, through the soulful “Disparo al Corazón” to the lead song on everyone’s Fire Island mix this year, “Isla Bella,” you’ll enjoy the emotion behind this album and the varied creativity as well. “Náufrago” is a slow jam that will surely be on your seaside playlist as well and if you don’t feel like dancing when “La Mordidita” comes on, you may in fact be el muerte. This is your summer-tan-dance-your-cocktails-off tune. Get the album now so you’re ahead of the curve–you’ll be hearing tracks from this all summer so impress your friends by singing along when they’re FIRST hearing it!
Jimmy Somerville, the voice of Bronski Beat and the Communards, has released a brand new album that will be the soundtrack for your pre-club and pre-tea primping. “Homage” is the disco album Somerville’s always wanted to make and it’s completely addictive. Aptly named, each “Homage” song is a tiny trip back in time to the ’80s and that ripe and amazing sense of possibility that fueled each evening getting ready for what the latest videos, clothing and, well, poppers would bring. If you remember sneaking in to “Saturday Night Fever,” bell bottom pants, KC, and the Sunshine Band, as well as thrilling to Donna Summer, you were just getting ready for the dark nights spent closing the club down with Jimmy. Get that feeling again spinning this CD or digging the MP3. “Homage” will truly bring it “Back to Me,” one of the most toe-tapping tracks, followed by “Bright Thing,” and “Learned to Talk,” which speaks in a completely different way. Mix it up with “Hometown Boy” on a brand new playlist and bring it all together, again.
