"Raiders of the Lost Ark" in Concert
|
....................................................................................................................................................................................... |
New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s (NJSO) cinematic adventures continued into 2017 with its presentation, during the first weekend of the New Year, of NJSO live, playing the score to fan favorite film “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” It was an all-ages show, where there were a great deal more young fans, some of whom wore their “Indy” chapeaus, as did some members of the orchestra!
The immediacy of the score is felt in a completely different way when you hear the NJSO, under the baton of Constantine Kitsopoulos, whose interpretation of the score makes it truly come alive. Each of the orchestra members wears a headphone to hear the “click track” that helps them keep time. The large screen is overhead for them and the click track is something that was widely during Bugs Bunny’s heyday by Carl Stalling, whom many of us can also credit with our introduction to Wagner and other classical music.
Knowing how the NJSO keeps up with the action is quickly forgotten in the richness that the live playing adds to the film. The sense of menace and suspense, the fullness of the fanfares, all are so much more meaningful! It was also delightful to see early-career work from Harrison Ford and Karen Allen.
