The 14th annual Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (PIGLFF) will take place from July 10 to 22, 2008, when over 140 films from all over the globe will be shown. The venues for this years' events are the Prince Music Theatre, 1412 Chestnut Street, the Wilma, 265 South Broad Street, and the Arts Bank, 250 South Broad Street.
The opening night film is "Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!" a "Where the Boys Are"-like comedy, but involving gay boys and all the mischief they can make during spring break in Fort Lauderdale. The opening night party after the film will be at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia Hotel at Penn's Landing. The closing night feature is called "Were the World Mine," a musical comedy centered around a production of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," with an all-male cast, in which a young actor casts a truly magical spell on his fellow thespians. Don't be an ass: sit your bottom in a theater seat and see this one. The closing night party will be at the Top of the Tower.
Nine shorts by local LGBT filmmakers make up a program called "Out in Philly." Among the films are "Straight & Butch," by Philadelphia Renaissance Man Butch Cordova, who will also offer a sneak preview of his documentary about the making of his calendar; "Valentine's Day," a new romantic comedy made by Mike Lemon of Mike Lemon Casting; and "Isn't It Nice: The Sex Dwarf Documentary," from Aegis Entertainment, concerning the fourth anniversary of Sex Dwarf, Philly's non-stop new-wave dance party. Speaking of dance parties, the Pansy Division, a groundbreaking proto-punk band, will perform at Philadelphia's legendary Trocadero on July 18, from 9 to 11 pm, as part of PIGLFF. Local artists will be further feted at "Meet the Philly Filmmakers," at an Ice Cream Sundae Social.

A program entitled "Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Leave the Closet: A Collection of Suspenseful Gay Shorts" features five shorts, including "Getting Luck," about Canadian director Christian Lloyd's solo journey to New Orleans for Southern Decadence in order to get over a breakup--he gets drunk while out on the town, wakes up with a man he doesn't recognize, and has no recollection of the previous night, but begins to put the pieces together, and comes to the realization that the stranger could be a serial killer, who has drugged him and brought him home against his will--and "Mommy's House," about two bears marooned in the mansion of a deranged woman, starring horror/sci-fi actress Veronica Cartwright. Bears are on the agenda again at a "Bear City" script reading and party. Some other special events are the Scion First Time Filmmaker Award presentation and various panel discussions.
The Philadelphia Film Society will honor popular writer, actress and comic Jane Lynch, best known to fans for her roles in Showtime Network's "The L Word," "Best in Show" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," with its 2008 Artistic Achievement Award for Acting. She will be presented with this award on July 12, at the PIGLFF screening of her new movie, "Tru Loved," at the Prince Music Theatre. The Philadelphia Film Society will also be honoring Alec Mapa as 2008 Entertainer of the Year. He will be given this award on July 18, at the Prince Music Theatre, where a screening of his stand-up performance will be shown as well. The self-proclaimed "Gayasian Sweetheart" was in the Broadway production of ""M Butterfly," in which he replaced B.D. Wong, and in "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," "Tru Loved," "Ugly Betty," and "Desperate Housewives." (Editor's note: 23 years ago, Alec Mapa was part of a group of gay and lesbian comics appearing regularly at Don't Tell Mama, in New York, in a series called "People Who Are Funny That Way," along with Lea de Laria and the late Bruce Hopkins. As part of this group, he performed in the first benefit ever for the recently-formed Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The hitherto-unknown Reno made a debut that night.)
Other celebrities scheduled to appear during PIGLFF are Brenda Vaccaro and Bob Balaban, from the cast of "Midnight Cowboy," in connection with a 40th anniversary screening of the movie, in a newly-restored 35 millimeter print. Other highlights of PIGLFF include screenings of "Breakfast with Scot" and "The Secrets." Some films especially recommended by the festival programmers are "Boystown," a comedy about Spanish men; "The World Unseen," about the romance of two Indian-South African women; and "Bangkok Love Story," a thriller, in its North American premiere.
PIGLFF was founded in 1995 by the TLA Entertainment Group and is the third largest event of its kind in the United States and largest on the East Coast. It earned praise as the "sexiest gay and lesbian film festival in the country" in Out and About magazine. Some highlights of past festivals have included a sing-along with the film "Xanadu," a staged reading of Todd Stephen's "Another Gay Movie" with Scott Thompson, Lypsinka, and Matthew Rush, the premiere of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark's "Elvira's Haunted Hills," and in-person appearances by director, author, and visual artist Clive Barker, playwright Mark Crowley ("Boys in the Band"), director John Waters, and erotica director Chi Chi LaRue.
