This is a fast-paced world we live in. With our constant quest for "newer, bigger, better, faster, more," sometimes we forget the riches of the past. The latest CD by Uptown Express, entitled "Walk Like A Man," reminds us that time makes diamonds.
The Uptown Express ensemble was originally conceived by New York City Gay Men's Chorus (NYCGMC) as a means of outreach to the community at large. These ambassadors of song first toured Manhattan and environs more than 16 years ago. Since then, they have played venues as diverse as a European tour to Melissa Rivers' wedding, as well as everything in between.
The new CD presents a contemporary take on songs spanning more than 100 years. I was born the year the Four Seasons had a hit with the title song and, as many times as we've heard Frankie Valli sing "Walk Like A Man," we've never heard it like this! Whenever a soloist or group covers a song of this magnitude, there is inevitable comparison. Dividing the verses among the different voices provides a texture not available in the original. Great choice!
Published in 1902, "Glow Worm" has been a standard for literally a millennium. Who could forget, for example, Lucille Ball's blazing sax solo version of it? Uptown Express really swings this classic most commonly associated with the Mills Brothers. Close harmonies are the hallmark of Uptown Express and the contemporary barbershop-type singing is energetic, supported and it sounds like these guys were having a great deal of fun.
Of the 11 tracks on this CD, "Slow Boat to China," arranged by the incomparable Alex Rybeck, demonstrates best the style that Uptown Express has perfected. Smooth, mellifluous and showing a candid sense of humor, it made me want to grab my grrl and swing her around the floor-dancing cheek to cheek, and then stealing a kiss. This kind of romance is missing from most of the songs written and performed today. Try not to smile at the up-tempo finale with a cute pentatonic quote.
The lushness of vocal harmony is overdue for a return, as this CD so ably shows. The winking innocence of "Slow Boat" is balanced with the passion of "Who Loves You". The icon medley tribute to lesbian and gay artists, and the refusal to change pronouns is fun, affirming and a political statement all at once. This is a great choice for a Pride Month release.
Be subversive and send this hot little number to LGBTI friends who live in far away places where it's more of a challenge to be oneself. Open some doors for those who have yet to experience the joy of self-discovery. Singers will find it inspiring. Music lovers will tap their feet. Doo Wop and close harmony fans will swing and swoon at the way these guys croon! Go see 'em at the Metropolitan Room June 19 and 26 at 7:30pm. $25 + two drink minimum.
