"What's the Point?" Scores Points with Pointed Commentary

"What's the Point?," a bubbly and irreverent, faced-paced new musical revue with a gayish sensibility, boasting songs by Alan Cancelino (music) and Hector Coris (lyrics); energetic singing and hoofing by Coris, Patrick Garrigan, and Eadie Scott; music direction by Joe Regan, stage direction by Collette Black, and choreography by Susan Haefner, opened on February 18 at the Reprise Room, where it continues, on Mondays at 7 p.m., through March 31.

An early highlight, the cheerful "That's Why We Love the Zoo," finds Hector and Patrick, as San Francisco Zookeepers, reveling in the park's exclusive population of gay animals. Got a possessive partner? Try driving him off, as Hector strives to, with plaintive, if acid-laced, country-western lament "How Can I Miss You (If You Won't Go Away?") But there's satisfaction guaranteed, courtesy of one's own hand, in Patrick's laidback ballad "I Played with Myself."

What's a hetero gal to do when it seems that all the men she meets are gay? Eadie rings the rafters-cue "The Man That Got Away"--as she searches for "A Real Straight Guy." The cast waxes political at the thought of a "Lady in the House"-no, not Hillary Clinton and not that House-but Nancy Pelosi, portrayed by Eadie, bringing a woman's touch-"[t]ough as nails, and soft as flax"--to the House of Representatives and well aware that she's next in line-cue "Hail to the Chief"-"[i]f something ever happened to Dubya or to Dick."

Methinks Patrick doth protest too much, in "Straight Guy in a Gay Show," probing the desperate plight of the gay-for-pay actor who plays gay so well that he keeps getting cast in leads in the likes of "La Cage aux Folles" and "Torch Song Trilogy." Don't, however, try tearing his television addict away from the set when there's a Spanish-language "Telenovela" on channel 47--"¡Ay! ¡Chihuahua!"--enticing him. Certainly not when "Dirty Sanchez," a seducer torridly limned in song by Hector, with Patrick and Eadie enacting the sultry scenes, is the central figure!

By the time Eadie gets to "Legs" ("And everything else in between"), an upbeat adult answer to the Disney "Little Mermaid," which signals the end of the evening much too soon, we've also been entertained by the company's qvetching and qvelling about mediocre vampire musicals, multitasking cell phones, Upper West Side Yuppies with exacting standards, pickups that look better in the tender night than the merciless light of day, and "American Idol"-with Hector selling it for all he's worth, scathing Simon Cowell be damned, in "My Moment"-all linked by verses of the title song, "What's the Point?," that thread through it, and the show's 70 minute have flown by.

Buy tickets to "What's the Point?" at the Reprise Room, 245 West 54th Street, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue, for $15 plus $15 food and/or drink minimum, at www.WTPoint.com or phone 347/678-8054 for reservations.
