Giuseppe's Got Soul

Giuseppe Spoletini
On November 4, the nation elected its first-ever African-American President. On November 11, a Canadian-Italian baritone introduced his CD of gospel and spirituals, produced and promoted by Nona Hendryx, of LaBelle fame. It's a new world!

Giuseppe Spoletini, Manhattan School of Music (MSM) alumnus, from Calgary, Alberta, released his new recording, "Giuseppe: Now Sings My Soul," on the Spirit Sings label, with music arranged by Hendryx and Joe Joubert, available at www.cdbaby.com. On Veteran's Day, Spoletini sang most songs from the CD at the Dicapo Opera Theatre, assisted by pianist David Shenton, percussionist Michael McCurdy, bass player Josh Paris, and-some spellings approximate-backup vocalists Ki Ki Hawkins, Keith Pruett, and Joe Giamalvo. The baritone will also sing at the Laurie Beechman Theater on November 17 and at the First United Methodist Church Christmas celebration, in Mount Vernon, on December 13.

Persuasive in presence, Spoletini sings with spirit indeed, in a light baritone, as he really sells the songs, which he obviously loves. These include Robert J. DeCormier, Jr.'s "Didn't It Rain, Children," Mahalia Jackson's "Trouble of the World," spiritual "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho," and Civillia D. Martin and Charles H. Gabriel's "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." Spoletini brings darker timbre to the contemplative "How Great Thou Art," by Stuart K. Hine, "The Lord's Prayer," and "I'm Gonna Tell God All of My Troubles," the first spiritual he ever learned, thanks to mezzo-soprano and MSM teacher Hilda Harris.

In honor of veterans lost and those now fighting, Spoletini added Irving Berlin's "God Bless America," not on the CD, to an earnest pairing of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone," from "Carousel," and John Newton's "Amazing Grace." Alluding to the fortunate election results and quipping, "may be impossible, a Canadian-Italian opera singer cuts a gospel album," he dedicated Hendryx's own "The Impossible," full of awe regarding God's work, to the CD's illustrious producer.
Spoletini and company ended with a rousing "Who'll Be a Witness for My Lord."

Pianist Shenton and spouse Erin K. Shields, who sings in an agreeable legit soprano, opened for Spoletini with a pairing of Lerner and Loewe's "Almost Like Being in Love," from "Brigadoon," and Rodgers and Hart's "This Can't Be Love," from "The Boys of Syracuse;" Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn's "Love Me or Leave Me;" Janis Ian's wistful "And Is She Beautiful;" Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine," blended with Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata; and Stephen Sondheim's "Being Alive," from "Company." Shenton also played contrasting piano pieces from his CD "Sunnyside Blues," limning Sunnyside, Queens vignettes-and bus lines-in the mournful "Feeling Blue on the Q32" and lively "Route 60."
