If Not the Best of All Possible NYCO "Candides," an Effervescent One Nonetheless |

Concluding its 2007-08 season with a two-week run of Harold Prince's 1982, cartoon carnival sideshow romp of a production of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide," with book, after Voltaire, by Hugh Wheeler and lyrics by Richard Wilbur-and Bernstein, John LaTouche and Stephen Sondheim- the New York City Opera (NYCO) is offering, if the best of all possible "Candides," then one that, though sometimes appearing to run on automatic pilot, to judge by the second night's performance, on April 9, usually succeeds, nonetheless, in entertaining, effervescing, and bringing smiles to listeners' faces. George Manahan conducts and Arthur Masella directs.
Daniel Reichard, from the cast of "Jersey Boys" on Broadway, makes a fine showing in the title role, dulcetly singing the tenor meditation, "It Must Be So," "Candide's Lament" ("Is this all then,/This the world?"), and "Ballad of the New World" ("On a noble errand across the sea"), and leading the company in an achingly beautiful "Make Our Garden Grow," the work's finale. Contributing a handsome presence as this figure of unshakeable faith that this is, as he has been taught, "the best of all possible worlds," Reichard sings his first solo while traversing the second row of the orchestra, five rows in front of where this writer sat, or close enough to see that his eyes are blue, and, when he's stripped to the waist for a flogging in the auto-da-fé scene, provides a not unwelcome bit of beefcake.
Lielle Berman, alternating with Lauren Worsham as Cunegonde, draws on bright and dusky hues in her flexible soprano to ensure a glistening account of the florid "Glitter and Be Gay." Every single note of the demanding showpiece's cascades of coloratura may not be a pearl, but enough of them are to make Berman's effort an impressive feat.
Theater and television's Richard Kind clearly commands the stage as a Dr. Pangloss whose classroom fairly burgeons with lusty desire-his for the bodacious Paquette (Jessica Wright), Candide and Cunegonde's for each other, and vain Maximilian's (Kyle Pfortmiller) for his own reflection in the mirror. Singing a high-lying line is not Kind's strong suit, as he proves in the Businessman/Voltaire's part in the first act finale, but he finds the more moderate tessitura of a number such as "My Love," the Governor's duet with rich-voiced baritone Pfortmiller's Maximilian en travesti, more agreeable.
Judith Blazer is a colorful Old Lady, who tangos with no fewer than 11 suitors in a spirited "I'm Easily Assimilated" and offers a hilarious tale of woe to the accompaniment of a rocking barcarolle. Blazer and Wright's mid-ocean catfight in "Quiet" is a highlight
Also meriting mention are the "Sheep Song," in the El Dorado scene, with Sarah Moulton and Deborah Lew as the pink sheep and Christopher Jackson as the gentle lion, and ensembles enhanced by Robert Ousley, Eric Michael Gillett, and veteran William Ledbetter, with NYCO for 45 years, in a variety of roles.
"Candide" plays on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 pm, through April 20. Tickets, priced from $16 to 130, are available at www.nycopera.com, from CenterCharge at 212/721-6500, or at the New York State Theater box office at Lincoln Center.
