"Iridium" is literally "of Rainbows" and if you are a jazz fan always chasing them then the pot of gold at the end of this rainbow is the Tierney Sutton Band. Playing through August 23 at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., they are touring to support their latest album, "Desire."
Those unfamiliar with Tierney Sutton's lilting voice and gorgeous diction are missing a treat. People who enjoy jazz standards and the art of arrangement will have one level of enjoyment. People who are themselves performers have an additional dimension of enjoyment, lingering over nuances of technique, timbre and interpretation.
The experience of Sutton in concert is like listening to a Maxfield Parrish landscape-it's clear yet dreamy, evoking other times, other places. Lush arrangements make equal partners of each instrument - Christian Jacob on piano, Ray Brinker on drums, Kevin Axt on upright bass, and Sutton with that gifted voice move as one force. Tierney clued the audience in that if they wanted to stay for both shows, the set lists would be entirely different. Further, if someone wanted to attend later in the week, they might not hear the same songs at all. Of course, when you have so much work to choose from then why do the same numbers over and over again?
The set that I enjoyed began with the popular "Fly Me To The Moon," with the signature riffs that transcend words, segueing into a trio of tunes from "My Fair Lady," including novel treatments of "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "I've Grown Accustomed to (His) Face," followed closely by "Show Me," with a wee quote from "Rhapsody in Blue." Delicious!
"Desire" was released earlier this year and the Tierney Sutton Band embraced one of the new songs, "Heart's Desire." Presented as advice one might give to a child to follow one's dream, this is a sweetly modeled bon mot to take away. Of course when you do, it's "S'Wonderful"-and that was the next selection. This is no derivative, slightly stylized version of a standard, but rather a celebration. As fluffy and full of limerance as this is, there is a dark and lovely bit to follow. Imagine the difference between a representational painting, like a Winslow, and compare it to a Monet-you'll begin to get an idea of how special this quartet's music really is-and how they are one in many.
"Whatever Lola Wants" was a dusky, musky journey through the raven shadows of a lush sexuality that tugged at everyone in the room-perhaps this is why there were so many men occupying the front tables. Tierney's blonde and ivory coloring and sassy delivery weave enchantment-her Lola is definitely casting a spell. The music is not standard in its harmonies and the concoction is not to everyone's taste, but it was certainly to mine. Having Jane Krakowski's Lola, from last Summer's "Damn Yankees," to compare, that was originally my benchmark. Now the two stand together, each an example of its genre.
The mood needed to be lifted and the perfect song for that is "Great Day," Vincent Youmans' uplifting song from his 1929 musical of the same name. The band is truly unified, trading around melody and harmony in all instruments-voice, piano, bass and drums-with the texture bringing the room right up. Masterfully taking us through many moods, the band then brought it back to New York with a rendition of "I Fall in Love too Easily," originally made famous by Frank Sinatra. Straightforwardly lovely, with a few twists of zest.
"It's All Right With Me" took us all to that place where many of us have been - it might not be Mr. Right, but it's Mr. Right now. For some, another person may be the opiate they need to forget-even for one night.
The Tierney Sutton Band lives for deconstructing melodies completely, polishing the emotion to a high gloss and reassembling them better than before and with a wit and style that makes the more familiar songs truly their own. The encore was "Paper Moon," with an evocation that resonated like prayer and that makes sense, since it's a bit of Bahá'í scripture about how ephemeral this world is-truly a great way to send us into a hot New York night with plenty to consider and enjoy-including a freshly signed copy of "Desire."
Run to Iridium as soon as you can between now and Sunday. Call 212/582-2121 for reservations or visit IridiumJazzClub.com. This is the kind of intimate experience that leaves you breathless in the moment and talking about it for days afterward. Don't miss it.
