Lily Tomlin
....................................................................................................
Lily Tomlin lit up the night with outrageous energy Friday night, October 23 at NJPAC in the heart of Newark. Though the sky was overcast and misting, nothing can dim her megawatt smile or lightning quick wit.

We arrived somewhat early, knowing that navigating roadways in rain requires extra effort. The theatre was sparsely populated when we took our seats, but all around us people who hadn't given themselves extra time were rushing to take their seats prior to showtime.

Fans packed the seats to the rafters and ranged in age from pre-Boomers who remember Lily's first gigs in NYC and on "Laugh-In" through the range of Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y whose knowledge of her work ranges through her Oscar-nominated performance in "Nashville" through Disney's "Big Business," work in children's DVDs, "I Heart Huckabees" and more. From the moment Lily entered, she had us riveted.

It feels very natural to refer to Ms. Tomlin as Lily. Her style is breezy and as familiar as having a cuppa with a dear friend. Thought provoking and mind-poking, the classic bits I recall from her LP "Lily Tomlin On Stage" (derived from her SRO Broadway show "Appearing Nitely"), like "Tell Miss Sweeney Goodbye," were included as was "Lud and Marie Meet Dracula's Daughter." Additionally, through the thread of forging a great career as an actress, when what she really wanted to be was a HoJo waitress, Lily intersperses bits like the one about a mother calling her son Billy in for dinner. This vision, though, is through a glass darkly as instead of dodging toys, she's dodging the landmines her son has buried in the yard, and complains of his driving his tank through her roses leaving telltale tracks. When he comes home without a leg, the pluperfect point becomes clear.

Lily bounces around the stage with the energy of the six year old Edith Ann, as she's done throughout her career. During Edith Ann's visit, she actually solicited questions from the audience. Even with a friendly group like ours, that's taking a serious chance! Edith Ann was absolutely in character and delightful. Lily's energy is boundless, as nearly as we can tell, and when called on how she generated it, she quipped, "You've SEEN the movie 'Twilight', haven't you?!"

The show runs two hours with no intermission and Lily is literally non-stop. When the show was completed, we clapped so long and hard that Lily came out with questions people had emailed to her prior to leaving for the show. She answered these questions, and riffed on them for some time, leaving us warm and ready and prepared to meet the cool misty rain on the way home. There is no greater food for thought or the heart than Lily Tomlin's brand of thoughtful, poignant comedy. Though she claims to have reached the pinnacle of her ambition, leaving Detroit to one day play Newark's NJPAC, she opens November 10 in Vegas. Treat yourself, make plans to see her live again and again and again.

NJPAC has a full season chock-full of internationally renowned performers like Rita Moreno, Smokey Robinson, orchestral music, dance, theatre and more. Check it out at www.njpac.org for more information, directions and tickets. Get there by train or by car. You owe it to yourself to experience NJPAC.
