Brandon Cutrell & Ray Fellman
Sensational singer Brandon Cutrell, in fine, fresh voice, and his marvelous maestro, pianist Ray Fellman, kicked off Pride Week and a fourth season of theater and open mic evenings, billed as Broadway at the Beach, at the Grove Hotel's Ice Palace on June 22.

Brandon began by inviting seductively, "Let's Misbehave," because "Tonight's the Night," softly, then letting out all the stops, and optimistically faced life's contradictions and vicissitudes with "One Hand in My Pocket."

'Nightlife icon' and frequent guest Kenny Holcomb similarly squarely played the hand he was dealt in "That's Life," the Frank Sinatra song, loaded with long-sustained notes, and returned for a sensitive "Bridge over Troubled Waters." Brandon and Kenny thrilled us as they crossed swords and tenor tones, playing the mate and the rival, challenging, "Does he love you like he loves me?"

Tyler Kane questioned why tofu and cottage cheese are supposed to be good for you, while pork and chicken-fried steak are not, reverently and riotously in "The dieter's prayer," and channeled Barbra Steisand as Yentl, shooting for more than just "a piece of sky."

Fresh from the previous night's "Broadway Bares," Danny Calvert ("Altar Boyz," "Rent") intriguingly fielded high tenor and mixed voice, declaring, in a late '50s-early '60s-style song, from "All Shook Up," "It hurts me to see the way he makes you cry," and looked unflinchingly at a relationship that has ended, singing, "I've been learning to live without you now" ("You don't love me anymore"), with a highly-ornamented vocal line.

Kristy Cates ("Wicked"), experienced and most excellent Elfaba, was on hand for a hopeful and forceful "The Wizard and I," and swore off involvement with "Down with love."
Brandon and Ray got hot with "Goody, Goody," with Brandon expertly negotiating a wide-ranging line, and, after a bit of Mozart's high soprano Queen of Night, in tribute to Shequida, wistfully considered being "Fifteen (when you've only got a hundred years to live)."
Jerad Bortz ("Wicked") and Steven Skeels, playing, respectively, hetero and gay siblings, dramatically debated about which was "The Chosen One," in a song from Steven's musical-in-progress, and Jerad poured out his soul, as well as that amazing high tenor range, demanding, "Pity the child."

Brian Roland invoked the powers that be for the end of rain and return of sun ("Stoop and feel it, stop and hear it"). Brad Simmons took over the keyboard, and pumping out energy, soaring and scatting, sang, "Don't stop me now." Ariel Sinclair queried, "Have you ever seen the rain?" This writer sang "Somewhere," from "West Side Story." Sal Piro conducted a lively Broadway leading ladies trivia contest, pitting Kristy against the hotel's Carlos.

Brandon saluted his alma mater with the Indiana University anthem and ended the evening with a love song, sweetly singing "Chasing Cars" ("Would you lie with me and just forget the world?")

Come to Brandon and Ray's Broadway at the Beach in Cherry Grove, on Mondays at 9 p.m. through the end of August, and catch them in the city, at the Laurie Beechman Theater, on 42nd Street at Ninth Avenue, on Friday nights for the After Party.
