On May 3, West Side Opera Society Director & pianist David Clenny and two of his star protégés, Sara Henry and Jovier Sanchez, presented an immensely enjoyable concert of Italian songs, arias and duets, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Manhattan, on West 100th Street, as a benefit for Trinity Place (www.trinityplaceshelter.org), the church's shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth.

Former mezzo-soprano Henry most certainly asserted her ascension into high soprano repertory with a fluent account of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's concert aria "Vorrei spiegarvi, o Dio," complete with silvery high Es. Her sound was lustrous and her legato smooth throughout and she more than did justice to the coloratura and wide-interval leaps. Henry further staked her claim to this rarified territory with a bravura rendition of Heinrich Proch's florid air, "Deh non torna, mio bene, mio tenero amore," and stratospheric variations, and crowned her effort with a ringing cadenza.

Sanchez began with a dulcet "Un'aura amorosa," Ferrando's aria from Mozart's "Così Fan Tutte." He proved that he had mastered Vincenzo Bellini's demandingly long-breathed bel canto line with his fluent "Il fervido desidero," "Dolente immagine," and "Vaga luna che inargenti," the last sharing some phrases with Pollione and Adalgisa's "Vieni in Roma," which ends the first scene of the composer's "Norma."

In Gioachino Rossini's song cycle "La Regata Veneziana," Henry's Anzoleta fervently encouraged her favorite gondolier, Momolo, before the boat race, cheered him on during the regatta and, with many kisses, celebrated his victory. In a group of Neapolitan songs by Paolo Tosti, Sanchez sensitively limned a perfect love, his "(caro) Ideale," and sang a paean to the dear one's sweet little mouth in "'A vucchella." The other songs were "L'ultima canzone" and "Aprile," which the tenor capped with a bright top note.

Sanchez's Nemorino wooed Henry's haughty Adina with all his heart in their lyrical "Una parola, o Adina," from Act One of Gaetano Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore." The duo's ardent encore was "O soave fanciulla," from Act One of Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème," ending with their fine high C.

Watch for Clenny and West Side Opera's "Beatrice di Tenda," by Bellini, postponed from March, at the end of this month, and "Norma" in June.
