Subversive Comedy at WOW |

Braving near-zero temperatures, I attended the opening night performance and New York premiere of "Waiting for the Show," a very funny yet thoughtful one-act play, under the auspices of Tender Thread Productions, on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the WOW Cafe Theater in the East Village.
The small space was nearly filled to capacity and the audience was warmly entertained by a talented cast of two playing multiple roles and very capably directed by the playwright, Theresa Diamond. The play was first performed at Philly Fringe last summer.
The minimal setting is the basement of a Research Hospital and we meet two women rehearsing a play, Angela Carolfi playing the part of Nina, who is acting and directing, and Kristin Ciccone playing the part of Anne. We soon realize that, as serious as their opening lines appear, there is subversive comedy at hand, and we are instantly engaged in the dynamic between these two women and what might transpire in their relationship. Some topical comments were heartily received by the diverse audience, along with incisive skewering of more typical objects of derision. Make plans to see this show, even if the weather does not improve, although the forecast is considerably warmer and brighter.
Recession pricing of $18 includes the NY Fringe solo show, "XY(T)," a PoMo Freakshow Production, an entertaining, informative foray into gender/sexuality that is well written and performed by Kestryl Cael Lowrey.
Performances continue at the WOW Cafe Theater, 59 East Fourth Street, between Bowery and Second Avenue, for a limited run on Thursdays through Saturdays, January 22 to 24, and 29 to 31 at 8 p.m.
