Brandon Cutrell & Daniel Lincoln

On June 21, at the Ice Palace, wonderful singer Brandon Cutrell hosted a gala opening night edition of "Broadway at the Beach," his and master pianist Ray Fellman's open mic musical theatre party, always a terrific event. Ray won't return to Fire Island until July 5, but we had, in singer-songwriter Daniel Lincoln, a welcome substitute at the keyboard. Brandon opened with a sensitive ballad-"You were my favorite love, that was my favorite year"-some of it unamplified when a fuse blew, and continued with "Goody, Goody," which he began stealthily, before swinging it. Singing and playing songs of his own, Daniel told us, in a lilting waltz, with a driving refrain, but a wistful ending, of having dates with big bad leathermen, armed with frightening accoutrements ("You fucking scare the shit out of me") and, stripped to just the briefest of briefs, sang nostalgically of "our summer melody."

The previous week, at the Ice Palace, a number of us watched the Tony Awards together and cheered when Uncle Fester, of "The Addams Family"-familiar Bway @ the Beach guest Kevin Chamberlin-appeared on the screen. Kevin returned here to sing "Just in Time," from "Bells Are Ringing," with some fancy ornamentation, and to introduce a number Andrew Lippa wrote, but didn't use in "Addams Family," Fester's sweetly childlike address to the moon-"when the moon says I love you"-which ended with an instrumental quote from Claude Debussy's "Claire de Lune," followed by Kevin's loud high note!

Telly Leung ("Rent," "Flower Drum Song," "Pacific Overtures") praised the lovely first day of summer with a polished song from "Godspell" ("All good gifts around us"), with a head tone high note at the end, and continued with a Karen Carpenter number. He'll be giving a show at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in Manhattan on July 18.

Kenny Holcomb cheerfully limned "A Perfect Love" and poured out his heart in some of Peter Allen's music Marcus Paul James ("In the Heights," "Rent") channeled disappointment in love into a hot selection ("Don't let the sun catch you crying, if your baby don't want you no more") and sang sweetly and sentimentally of "Home," from "The Wiz."

Toby Blackwell ("Rent") delivered one of Kristin Chenoweth's songs, from "Promises, Promises," with spirit, and went on to an entertaining parody, "And I Am Telling You I Am Not Coming," instead of "Going," because of logic-defying subway complications. Catch his show at the Beechman, "Bitter and be Gay," on June 30 and July 9.

Local celebs who took the stage were Spicky Hilton, who 'defied gravity' vocally, ascending to some stratospheric notes, in the powerhouse song from "Wicked;" Top of the Bay restaurant's Paul Martinovic, giving us some fervent Disney-"Out There;" Rhett Kalman, offering a dulcet "I Know I Chose Right;" and yours truly, serenading significant other Joe Saporito with the Gershwin's "Someone to Watch over Me." Sal Piro hosted a theater trivia contest that pitted Paul-who won-against Telly's other half.

This evening concluded in gayest Bway @ the Beach style with Marcus and Telly declaring love in "One Thousand Kisses," from "Rent."
