Pianist Ray Fellman made his seasonal return to his and singer Brandon Cutrell's musical theatre party, Broadway at the Beach, at the Ice Palace on July 5, on an evening featuring some exceptional Broadway talent. Brandon opened by observing, philosophically, about what life deals you, "it's either sadness or euphoria," with a long vocalise at the end, and went on to signature song "One Hand in My Pocket," the Alanis Morrisette number, with flair, and to signature pairing "Tonight's the Night" and "Let's Misbehave."

Danny Calvert ("Altar Boyz") offered "Good Morning, Baltimore," from "Hairspray," with enthusiasm and extensive ornamentation-who says a man can't play Tracy Turnblad?-and followed it with "Kiss the Air," by Scott Allen, the wistful song of a gay man breaking up with the woman he was about to marry.

Hallie Morse ("Mamma Mia"), a Fire Island virgin, sang a fervent "Waiting for Life to Begin," from "Once on this Island," with sustained notes getting her mid-song applause and, changing into a rainbow skirt and glitzy silver top, sang, of Sally and her "Podunk hunk," "I see what I want to see, I know what I want to know."

Ryan Raftery ("Ugly Betty," Joe's Pub on July 26) explained what one needs in order to be a successful pimp-"It don't take much"-and sang, to the boy he loved in high school, but couldn't ask to the prom, "Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone."

Liz McCartney ("South Pacific") dazzled us by singing her résumé, a medley of bits of songs from the Broadway shows she's been in, but not necessarily songs that she sang in them, and these included "One day more"-all the voices-from "Les Misérables," "Love Makes the World Go 'Round" from "Carnival," "Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You" from "Phantom of the Opera," "Bali H'ai" from "South Pacific," and selections from "Taboo" and "Mamma Mia!" She also gave us a torchy number ("I live among the ruins") and belted out a dramatic "Diamonds Are Forever."

Gerald (with a hard G) McCullouch ("CSI," "Daddy," "Bear City") celebrated same-sex love with a dulcet "What More Can I Say?" from William Finn's "Falsettos," and, at the piano, played and sang his arrangement of a Prince song ("I wanna be your lover").

Comic Poppi Kramer entertained with anecdotes about Liza Minnelli, the Pines, and "Charlie Brown's Christmas." Sal Piro hosted a trivia contest about sitcoms and Broadway. Chuck Prentice performed his own parodies of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "All of Me." And Nunzio Sisto played and sang "One More Beer," about memories of drinking, from the show "Sobriety."
Catch Brandon and Ray's Broadway at the Beach at the Ice Palace every Monday of the summer at 9 p.m.
