Imani Winds

Throughout this summer, QonStage has been reviewing music that is ideal for stay-cations or day trips, but Imani Winds' "Terra Incognita" is the soundtrack for your honest-to-goodness vacation.
Lovers of modern jazz will recognize the names of the composers of these pieces-Wayne Shorter has written the title piece, "Terra Incognita." Considering it translates to "unknown land," it is perfect for going to faraway places with strange sounding names. Shorter typically writes strictly for his own group, so for him to have written this for Imani Winds is an honor for them indeed. Imani Winds commissioned this piece for their Legacy Project and they are not our parents' woodwind quintet. Grammy nominated and classically trained, Imani Winds carries forward modern classical sounds, with culturally infused blessings from, just in this album, Cuba, Louisiana and the land unknown.
Cuban composer Paquito D'Rivera's "Kites" is a beautiful piece and he brings his clarinet to add even more color to the quintet's work. Alex Brown is on piano and you can hear Havana through Mr. D'Rivera's work, as he evokes the Cuba of long ago.
Jason Moran's "Cane" has Creole flavor. The culture itself is a pastiche and you'll taste a number of different flavors in this four-movement piece. The three pieces here fit together so well that if you want to begin a trip, or even your work or weekend day, with some thrumming energy, this is the album for you.
Each composer's influence is clear and, while you can listen to this in the car or on the 'pod, for the initial hearing, give yourself a block of time to savor it. You will continue to hear more and more in it, and you owe it to yourself to taste the flavors of this music in a fine and quiet place.
If you would like to catch Imani Winds live, information about their tour schedule may be found at imaniwinds.com. Plan to haunt your favorite classical CD seller on August 24, the day that "Terra Incognita" comes home to you.
